As with all other body parts, the eyes also tend to gradually wear down with age. Some of the symptoms that you may suffer from, as you grow older include puffiness, eye bags, dark circles, droopy eyelids and occasional redness. This should not dampen your spirits, though. With the advancements in technology, you can now return your eyes to their youthful splendour through an eyelift surgery.

What is an eyelift?

The first thing that people should understand about what is an eyelift is that it is a cosmetic procedure. This means that it generally will not be covered by your medical insurance. It is a surgical procedure, commonly referred to as a blepharoplasty, which comprises of removing excess tissues of fat from the eyelids. As you grow older, your skin tends to lose its elasticity.  This then leads to a change of your appearance in different ways such as droopy eyelids, puffy eyes and even eye bags. Opting for an eyelift can drastically reduce these signs of ageing, which works toward giving you a youthful appearance.

What is involved in the procedure for an eyelift?

Typically, the surgery for a blepharoplasty tends to take several hours. To begin with, the patient either will receive some local anaesthesia or will have general anaesthesia administered to them. This type of procedure is conducted by either a plastic surgeon or a cosmetic surgeon and is usually done in an outpatient clinic. The doctor that is undertaking the procedure will start off by making marking areas on the eyelids. These markings are where the cosmetic surgeon will make their incisions. Generally, any scarring that may occur due to the surgery tends to be naturally covered by the folds of skin on the eyes. The aim of blepharoplasty surgery is to enhance the appearance of the eyelids. This is done through reshaping any excess fat in the eyelids or through suctioning of the tissues of fat in both the tendons and the muscles.

What can you expect during recovery from eyelift surgery?

As with most other surgical procedures, you should expect some swelling and even some bruising in the affected areas right after surgery. To relieve these symptoms, you can hold an ice pack to the area while keeping your head elevated. In addition to this, you should steer clear from any makeup for a few weeks after undergoing the surgery. Other things you should avoid include any forward bending, putting on contact lenses or driving.
